What Makes Swedish Hard to Transcribe
Swedish builds new words by joining them, and splitting them by mistake, särskrivning, is a classic error: a sjuksköterska is a nurse, a sjuk sköterska is a nurse who is ill. Speech gives no gap either way, so the transcript has to decide from meaning. New or very long compounds are the ones to proofread.
Skåne, Gothenburg, Gotland and Norrland sound so different that Swedes can often place a speaker within a sentence. Finland Swedish has its own standard pronunciation, a different rhythm, no tonal word accents and words of its own. The model is trained on Swedish speech from across Sweden and Finland.
Meetings in Stockholm are full of deadlines, feedback and workshops, and English words pick up Swedish endings: mejla, googla, deadlinen.
