What Makes French Hard to Transcribe

Words that sound alike, spelled differently
Not one French, but several
Spoken French is not written French

Ces, ses, c’est and s’est are one sound. So are parler, parlé and parlez, and il parle and ils parlent. A French transcript has to choose the spelling from the meaning of the sentence, not from the audio, which is why a quick read-through should focus on verb endings and plural agreement.

Words that sound alike, spelled differently

A Montréal podcast, a Brussels lecture and an interview in Dakar differ in vowels, rhythm and vocabulary. Québécois turns tu into tsu and mixes in English; Belgian and Swiss speakers say septante and nonante. The model is trained on speech from across the French-speaking world, not only on Paris broadcast French.

Not one French, but several

People drop the ne (« je sais pas »), squeeze words together (« y a », « t’as vu ») and run liaisons across word boundaries. A transcript follows what was said; for a published quote you may want to restore the written form. The editor shows text and audio side by side, so that takes minutes, not a second listen.

What a Clean French Transcript Looks Like

Three lines from an interview, and what each one shows.

  1. Speaker 1

Ils parlaient déjà de ça quand on est arrivés.

The verb sounds the same in the singular and the plural here. The plural ending is chosen from the context, and endings like this are worth a glance.

  2. Speaker 2

Je sais pas, on verra bien.

Kept as spoken, without the first half of the negation, as French speakers usually drop it. For a printed quote, add it back in the editor.

  3. Speaker 1

On en a vendu quatre-vingt-dix-sept, soit 12,5 % de plus.

French numbers are long when spoken and short when written. Check that figures use the decimal comma before the transcript goes into a report.

A six-person panel discussion, and it kept every voice straight. I stopped double-checking after the third transcript.

No card, no tricks — I tested real files before paying and upgraded a week later because the workflow stuck.

Had trouble with a huge file — support walked me through batch upload the same morning. Rare these days.

Field interviews go in as MP3s and come out as clean DOCX with timestamps. My write-up time dropped by half.

Uploaded a two-hour recording during lunch — the transcript was waiting before I finished my coffee. The accuracy genuinely surprised me.

Our legal team approved it because processing stays on EU infrastructure. That alone ruled out most of the competition.

Yes. The model is trained on French from across the French-speaking world, so regional accents and everyday vocabulary are recognised, not only standard Paris French. Strong slang or heavy code-switching with English may need a few edits.
Most of the time, because the spelling is chosen from the sentence, not the sound alone. Silent endings are where French transcripts go wrong most often, so when you review, look first at verb endings and plural agreement.
It follows the speech, so a dropped ne usually stays dropped and contractions like « y a » stay as spoken. That suits research and subtitles. For a quote in print, restore the written form in the editor.
Up to 99.8% on clear audio, with French punctuation and capitalisation. Background noise, overlapping speakers and phone-quality recordings lower it, and the editor makes the remaining fixes quick.
