What Makes Dutch Hard to Transcribe

Dutch and Flemish, one spelling
Same sound, different letters
English words, Dutch rules

Amsterdam, Limburg and Antwerp share one official spelling but not one sound. The hard northern g turns soft in the south and in Flanders, Flemish speakers say gij and ge, and everyday words differ: goesting, frigo and amai are Belgian Dutch. The model is trained on Dutch speech from the Netherlands and Belgium alike.

Dutch and Flemish, one spelling

Dutch devoices final consonants, so ik word and hij wordt end in the same t sound; only grammar decides where the dt goes. Ei and ij are one vowel too, which makes leiden (to lead) and lijden (to suffer) homophones. The transcript picks the spelling from the sentence, and these endings are the first thing to check.

Same sound, different letters

A Dutch meeting is full of deadlines, feedback and teammeetings. Borrowed verbs get Dutch spelling (gecanceld, geüpdatet, gedownload) and mixed compounds are written as one word, just like arbeidsongeschiktheidsverzekering. The transcript follows these rules, and the editor makes it quick to fix any you would spell differently.

What a Clean Dutch Transcript Looks Like

Three lines from a project call, and what each one is worth checking for.

  1. Speaker 1

Het rapport wordt morgen om half drie gepresenteerd.

The verb ends in dt because the subject is a singular noun. The time is half past two, not half past three, which matters once it ends up in English subtitles.

  2. Speaker 2

Amai, daar heb ik nu echt geen goesting in.

Flemish, kept as spoken: both colloquial words are everyday Belgian Dutch. Whether to keep them in a published text is an editorial choice, not an error.

  3. Speaker 1

We hebben de teammeeting gecanceld en de planning geüpdatet.

An English compound written as one word and two English verbs with Dutch endings. Both follow the official Dutch spelling rules for loanwords.

A six-person panel discussion, and it kept every voice straight. I stopped double-checking after the third transcript.

Yes. The model is trained on Dutch from both the Netherlands and Belgium, so Flemish pronunciation and common words such as goesting or frigo are recognised. Strong regional dialect, for example West Flemish, is harder and may need more edits.
Usually, because the spelling is chosen from the whole sentence, not from the sound alone. They remain the most common slips in Dutch text, from a transcript or a person, so check verb forms like wordt, gebeurd and gebeurt when you proofread.
They are kept as English words, with Dutch spelling where Dutch has a standard form, such as gecanceld or geüpdatet, and mixed compounds like teammeeting written as one word. If your organisation spells a term differently, change it in the editor.
Dutch writes decimals with a comma, 12,5 rather than 12.5, and says the units first: eenentwintig is 21. Half drie means 2:30, not 3:30. Before figures or times go into a report or subtitles, compare them with the audio.
Up to 99.8% on clear audio, with Dutch punctuation and capitalisation. Background noise, crosstalk and phone-quality recordings lower it; with the editor, the remaining fixes take little time.
