What Makes Greek Hard to Transcribe

One sound, five spellings
Tonos, diaeresis and a question mark that looks like a semicolon
Cypriot Greek, English and Greeklish

Modern Greek pronounces ι, η, υ, ει and οι identically, and the same goes for ο and ω, or ε and αι. So λύπη (sorrow) and λείπει (is missing) sound the same, as do τοίχος (a wall) and τείχος (a city wall). The spelling has to come from the meaning of the sentence, which is why these vowels are the first thing to check.

One sound, five spellings

Almost every word of two or more syllables carries a tonos, and its position can change the word: πότε means “when?”, ποτέ means “never”. The diaeresis in κοροϊδεύω tells you the vowels are read separately. Greek questions end with ; and the raised dot · does the work of a semicolon, so do not “correct” them in an English editor.

Tonos, diaeresis and a question mark that looks like a semicolon

Cypriot Greek has its own consonants, rhythm and vocabulary, and business Greek is full of English terms. The model is trained on Greek speech from different regions, but heavy dialect is worth a closer read. The transcript is written in the Greek alphabet; it does not turn speech into Greeklish, the Latin-letter spelling used in chats.

What a Clean Greek Transcript Looks Like

Three lines from an interview, and what each one shows.

  1. Speaker 1

Μου λείπει πολύ η Αθήνα, αλλά δεν το μετανιώνω.

Two Greek words sound the same here, and the meaning decides the spelling. This is the kind of word worth a glance.

  2. Speaker 2

    Πότε θα είναι έτοιμη η μετάφραση;

A question, so it ends with the Greek question mark, which looks like a semicolon. The accent on the first word also marks it as “when” rather than “never”.

  3. Speaker 1

Η συνάντηση είναι στις 15 Μαρτίου, στις 10:30 το πρωί.

The date is spoken in full and written as a figure with the month in the genitive. Check dates and times before the text goes into a report.

Rated Excellent 4.8/5 based on 580+ reviews

A six-person panel discussion, and it kept every voice straight. I stopped double-checking after the third transcript.

Uploaded a two-hour recording during lunch — the transcript was waiting before I finished my coffee. The accuracy genuinely surprised me.

Our legal team approved it because processing stays on EU infrastructure. That alone ruled out most of the competition.

In most cases, because the spelling is chosen from the sentence, not the sound alone. Words that differ only in ι, η, υ, ει or οι, or in ο and ω, are where Greek transcripts most often need a fix, so start your review there.
Greek letters, with the tonos, the diaeresis and the Greek question mark. There is no conversion to Greeklish. If you need the content in Latin script for an English-speaking reader, translate the transcript into English instead.
Yes. The model is trained on Greek speech from different regions, so Cypriot pronunciation is recognised in most recordings. Strong dialect vocabulary and quick switches into English may need a few edits.
There is no separate text-to-speech tool, but you can dub a video into Greek with an AI voice. Transcribe or translate it first, then use AI Dubbing to create the Greek voice track.
Up to 99.8% on clear audio, with Greek punctuation and capitalisation. Background noise, overlapping speakers and phone-quality recordings lower it, and the editor makes the remaining fixes quick.
All common audio and video formats — MP3, WAV, M4A, MP4, MOV, MKV and more — up to 8 GB per file, or a YouTube or Vimeo link. Export to SRT, VTT, ASS, TXT, DOCX, PDF, CSV, XLSX or JSON.
Yes. You get 30 free minutes once, with no credit card: short Greek recordings are transcribed in full, long ones show the first 10 minutes.
