What Makes Czech Hard to Transcribe
The háček marks softness (č, š, ž, ř, ě), the čárka marks a long vowel (á, é, í, ó, ú, ý) and the kroužek gives ů. Length changes meaning: drahá is “dear”, dráha is a track. Some spellings share one sound — být (to be) and bít (to beat), or ú in úkol and ů in dům — so the right letter comes from the word, not the audio.
Most people speak obecná čeština in conversation: dobrý becomes dobrej, mléko becomes mlíko, okno becomes vokno. A transcript follows what was said, so an interview may read “to je dobrej nápad”. For a quote in print or official minutes, you may want spisovná čeština instead, which the editor lets you restore line by line.
Nouns, adjectives and names decline through seven cases: pan Novák, s panem Novákem, paní Nováková. Ř, the sound in Dvořák and řeka, is its own letter and easy to mishear on a poor line. Stress always falls on the first syllable, so in fast speech short words can blur into the next one.
