What Makes Indonesian Hard to Transcribe

A close neighbour: Malay
Two registers in one language
English and regional languages in the mix

Indonesian and Malay share most of their grammar and much of their vocabulary, and speech recognition treats them as one group. The differences are in the words: uang and wang for money, kantor and pejabat for office, and kereta means a train in Jakarta but a car in Kuala Lumpur. If auto-detection picks Malay, the spelling drifts. For Indonesian recordings, choose Indonesian yourself.

News, lectures and official meetings use formal Bahasa Indonesia. Podcasts, vlogs and interviews often sound nothing like it: gue and lo instead of saya and kamu, nggak or gak instead of tidak, and particles like kok, sih, dong and lah that carry tone rather than meaning. A transcript follows what was said, so informal speech stays informal. Decide early whether you need verbatim or a cleaned-up version.

Two registers in one language

Indonesian speakers switch to English for work terms (meeting, deadline, update) and often attach Indonesian affixes to them: di-cancel, meeting-nya. Javanese, Sundanese and other regional languages appear too, from a single word like piye to whole sentences. The model is trained on Indonesian speech from different regions; stretches spoken fully in Javanese are where a few edits are most likely.

What a Clean Indonesian Transcript Looks Like

Three lines from a podcast and a business call, and what each one shows.

  1. Speaker 1

Gue sih nggak masalah, asal meeting-nya jangan diundur lagi.

Informal Jakarta speech, kept as spoken. The English word takes an Indonesian suffix with a hyphen, the usual way to write an Indonesian ending on a foreign word.

  2. Speaker 2

Anak-anak sudah pulang sejak tadi siang.

Formal register, with the plural made by repeating the word. Standard spelling joins the repetition with a hyphen rather than the number 2 used in chat messages.

  3. Speaker 1

Harganya naik jadi Rp1,5 juta, sekitar 12% dari tahun lalu.

Indonesian uses a decimal comma and writes the currency symbol directly before the amount. Check figures before the text goes into a report.

Because Indonesian and Malay are so close, picking the language yourself gives the most consistent spelling. Do the same if the recording opens with English or music.

A six-person panel discussion, and it kept every voice straight. I stopped double-checking after the third transcript.

Other tools gave me a lowercase stream of words. Here sentences actually read like sentences — barely any cleanup.

No card, no tricks — I tested real files before paying and upgraded a week later because the workflow stuck.

Had trouble with a huge file — support walked me through batch upload the same morning. Rare these days.

Field interviews go in as MP3s and come out as clean DOCX with timestamps. My write-up time dropped by half.

Uploaded a two-hour recording during lunch — the transcript was waiting before I finished my coffee. The accuracy genuinely surprised me.

Frequently Asked Questions

About transcribing Indonesian.

All questions
Upload a Indonesian audio or video file up to 8 GB, or paste a link from YouTube or another site. BlaBlaScribe’s AI turns the speech into text with speaker labels and timestamps; on clear recordings, accuracy reaches up to 99.8%. Check the transcript against the audio in the editor, then export TXT, DOCX, PDF, CSV, XLSX, JSON, SRT, VTT or ASS. The first 30 minutes are free, no credit card required.
It can, if you leave the language on auto-detect: the two are close enough that detection treats them as one group. Select Indonesian before you start and the transcript will use Indonesian spelling and vocabulary. For Malaysian recordings, select Malay.
Yes. Jakarta slang, informal negation and particles such as kok, sih, dong and deh are recognised and kept as spoken. Informal words have no fixed spelling (gak, ga, nggak), so for published text you may want to make them consistent in the editor.
English terms are usually written in English spelling, with Indonesian affixes attached by hyphen as speakers use them. Short Javanese or Sundanese words inside Indonesian sentences are generally recognised; long passages entirely in a regional language may need editing.
Not as a separate text-to-speech tool, but you can dub a video into Indonesian with an AI voice (AI dubbing), from English or another language. The speech is transcribed and translated first, then the Indonesian audio track is generated.
Up to 99.8% on clear audio, with punctuation and capitalisation. Street noise, people talking over each other and phone-quality recordings lower it, and the editor makes the remaining fixes quick.
All common audio and video formats — MP3, WAV, M4A, MP4, MOV, MKV and more — up to 8 GB per file, or a YouTube or Vimeo link. Export to SRT, VTT, ASS, TXT, DOCX, PDF, CSV, XLSX or JSON.
Yes. You get 30 free minutes once, with no credit card: short Indonesian recordings are transcribed in full, long ones show the first 10 minutes.
