What Makes Italian Hard to Transcribe

Double consonants change the word
Accents and apostrophes the ear cannot hear
Regional accents and plenty of English

Italian tells apart pairs like pala and palla, caro and carro, or sete and sette only by the length of a consonant. In careful speech the difference is clear; in fast conversation, and in northern accents that shorten doubled consonants, it can almost disappear. The spelling then has to come from the sentence, which is why rare words and surnames deserve a quick check.

Double consonants change the word

È with an accent is a verb, e without one means and; the same goes for là and la, sì and si, né and ne. Perché and poiché take an acute accent, not a grave one, and un po’ ends in an apostrophe because a syllable has been dropped. None of this is audible, so the transcript places it from grammar. When you review, look at short words and at elisions.

Accents and apostrophes the ear cannot hear

Italian sounds different in Milan, Rome, Naples and Palermo: open and closed vowels shift, final vowels are swallowed, and dialect words slip into everyday speech. Office Italian also borrows heavily from English, so words like call, meeting, feedback and deadline usually keep their English spelling. The model is trained on Italian from all regions, and you do not choose one first.

What a Clean Italian Transcript Looks Like

Three lines from a meeting, and what to look at in each.

  1. Speaker 1

È arrivato il preventivo? Perché non lo vedo nella cartella.

The first word is the verb, so it takes a grave accent and keeps it as a capital letter. The word for why takes an acute accent instead. Neither accent is heard, so both are placed from the grammar of the sentence.

  2. Speaker 2

Ne parliamo un po’ dopo la call, va bene?

The short form of a little ends in an apostrophe, not an accent, because a syllable has been dropped. The English word for the call stays in English, as it usually does in Italian office talk.

  3. Speaker 1

Il fatturato è cresciuto del 12,5% rispetto al 2025.

Italian writes a decimal comma, and the per cent sign usually follows the number without a space. Check figures and long words with doubled consonants before the text goes into a report.

Auto-detection samples several stretches of speech across the file. If the video opens with an English intro, or the speakers switch between Italian and English a lot, set Italian yourself. One Italian setting covers every region.

A six-person panel discussion, and it kept every voice straight. I stopped double-checking after the third transcript.

Frequently Asked Questions

About transcribing Italian.

All questions
Yes. The model is trained on Italian from across the country, so regional pronunciation and everyday vocabulary are recognised. You do not choose a region: one Italian setting covers them all. Speech in dialect rather than Italian, or very heavy slang, may need a few edits.
Usually, because the spelling is chosen from the whole sentence, not from the sound alone. Doubled consonants, accents on short words and rare surnames are where Italian transcripts most often slip, so check those first.
Yes. The transcript uses full Italian spelling: à, è, é, ì, ò, ù and apostrophes in elisions. Accents that only grammar decides and the difference between an accent and an apostrophe are worth a glance before you publish.
For interviews, classes, podcasts, meetings and videos, an AI transcript plus a short review in the editor covers most needs, and it is ready in minutes. There is no human proofreading, so for certified legal or court transcripts use a specialised service.
Up to 99.8% on clear audio, with Italian punctuation, accents and capitalisation. Background noise, overlapping voices and phone-quality recordings lower it, and the editor makes the remaining fixes quick.
All common audio and video formats — MP3, WAV, M4A, MP4, MOV, MKV and more — up to 8 GB per file, or a YouTube or Vimeo link. Export to SRT, VTT, ASS, TXT, DOCX, PDF, CSV, XLSX or JSON.
