What Makes Polish Hard to Transcribe
Rz and ż, ó and u, h and ch are pairs that sound identical in standard Polish but are spelled differently: może means “maybe”, morze means “sea”, and hart and chart are two unrelated words. The right letter comes from the word and the sentence, not from the audio, so these pairs are the first thing to scan when you proofread.
Nouns, adjectives and names change their endings with the case: Jan Nowak, z Janem Nowakiem, o Janie Nowaku. In quick speech a final -ę often sounds like a plain e, so widzę and proszę have to be restored from the grammar. A woman’s surname ending in a consonant, such as Nowak, does not decline at all, which is easy to “correct” by mistake.
Dates are spoken as ordinals in the genitive: trzeciego maja dwa tysiące dwudziestego szóstego roku is what you hear, 3 maja 2026 r. is what you usually want on the page. Polish words also run long — odpowiedzialność, przedsiębiorstwo, najprawdopodobniej — so a subtitle line fills up faster than it would in English.
