Russian Transcription: Russian Audio and Video to Text

Russian swallows unstressed vowels and packs grammar into word endings, so the ear alone cannot tell you how a word is spelled. Upload a recording and get a Cyrillic transcript with speakers labelled and every line timestamped.

What Makes Russian Hard to Transcribe

Unstressed vowels all sound alike
Fast speech drops whole syllables
Numbers, names and borrowed words

In everyday speech an unstressed о sounds like а, and е, я and и blur together: молоко is said roughly as malako. The spelling has to come from the word and its grammar, not from the sound. Endings suffer most, because they are rarely stressed, and a wrong ending changes the case, the number or who did what.

Unstressed vowels all sound alike

Сейчас becomes щас, здравствуйте becomes здрасте, тысяча comes out as тыща. A readable transcript writes the full form, while research on how people actually talk may want the spoken one. Fillers like ну, вот, как бы and короче carry little meaning but fill a lot of airtime, and it is worth deciding up front whether they stay.

Fast speech drops whole syllables

Russian numbers change with case: in a sentence you hear пятью, двумястами, полутора, and the transcript has to settle on digits or words. Names come with patronymics, and business speech is full of English terms such as дедлайн, фидбэк, колл, some in Cyrillic, some said in English. Consistency here makes the text usable.

What a Clean Russian Transcript Looks Like

Three lines from an interview, and what each one shows.

  1. Speaker 1

Честно говоря, мы не ожидали, что проект займёт полтора года.

The phrase is said quickly and casually but written in standard spelling. The commas around the introductory phrase follow Russian punctuation rules.

  2. Speaker 2

Анна Сергеевна, а дедлайн по отчёту всё ещё в пятницу?

A name with a patronymic and an English loanword written in Cyrillic, the way Russian business writing usually spells it.

  3. Speaker 1

Ну, если коротко, выручка выросла примерно на 15%.

The filler at the start can stay for research or go for publication. The spoken number appears as a figure, which is easier to check against your data.

A six-person panel discussion, and it kept every voice straight. I stopped double-checking after the third transcript.

Frequently Asked Questions

About transcribing Russian.

All questions
Yes. Words are written in standard spelling, not as they sound, so reduced vowels and colloquial forms like щас usually come out as сейчас. Mumbled or very fast passages are where endings are most likely to be wrong, so check those against the audio.
Russian texts use both conventions, and the transcript may not be consistent about ё. If your style guide requires ё everywhere, or nowhere, a quick find-and-replace in the exported text settles it.
In Cyrillic. The transcript is not transliterated, so names and quotes can go straight into Russian documents. If you need English text, translate the transcript after it is done.
Up to 99.8% on clear audio. Background noise, overlapping speakers and phone-quality recordings lower it, and the editor shows text and audio side by side, so the remaining fixes are quick.
Yes. Create Russian subtitles from the same file, then translate them into English or 50+ other languages with the timing kept.
All common audio and video formats — MP3, WAV, M4A, MP4, MOV, MKV and more — up to 8 GB per file, or a YouTube or Vimeo link. Export to SRT, VTT, ASS, TXT, DOCX, PDF, CSV, XLSX or JSON.
