What Makes German Hard to Transcribe

Compound words with no audible gap
Germany, Austria, Switzerland
Capital letters carry meaning

Speakers say Kundenzufriedenheitsumfrage in one breath, and the transcript has to write it as one word too, not as Kunden Zufriedenheits Umfrage. Mixed compounds follow their own rules: E-Mail-Adresse and Social-Media-Kampagne take hyphens. Long, rare or freshly coined compounds are the first thing to check.

Compound words with no audible gap

A Viennese interview, a podcast from Zurich and a Hamburg meeting sound noticeably different and use different everyday words: Jänner and heuer in Austria, Velo and parkieren in Switzerland. The model is trained on German speech from all three countries. Swiss dialect, Mundart, is a harder case: it has no standard spelling, so the text tends to come out closer to Standard German.

Every German noun starts with a capital, and so does the polite Sie. On audio, Sie (you) and sie (she or they) are the same word, so the transcript decides from context, as it does with das Essen and essen. At the start of a sentence the capital gives no clue, which makes those lines worth a second look.

What a Clean German Transcript Looks Like

Three lines from a business call, and what to look for in each.

  1. Speaker 1

Die Kundenzufriedenheitsumfrage haben wir im März endlich abgeschlossen.

One long compound, written as one word. The sentence also shows the verb bracket: the auxiliary opens it and the participle closes it at the very end.

  2. Speaker 2

Können Sie mir die Unterlagen bis Freitag schicken?

The capitalised pronoun marks the polite form. In lower case it would refer to a third person, and only context tells them apart.

  3. Speaker 1

Im dritten Quartal lag der Umsatz bei 4,2 Millionen Euro, ein Plus von 23 %.

German says the units before the tens, so the spoken number runs in the opposite order to the digits. Written German uses a decimal comma and a space before the per cent sign.

A six-person panel discussion, and it kept every voice straight. I stopped double-checking after the third transcript.

Yes. The model is trained on German speech from Germany, Austria and Switzerland, so regional accents and words such as Jänner, heuer or Velo are recognised. Standard German spoken with a Swiss or Austrian accent works well.
It is harder. Schweizerdeutsch has no fixed spelling and differs from Standard German in grammar and vocabulary, so the transcript usually comes out closer to Standard German and some words may be missed. Check dialect recordings carefully before you publish them.
In most cases, yes: the model writes compounds the way German spelling expects, joined or hyphenated. Very long, rare or newly coined compounds, and brand names inside them, are where you are most likely to need a quick fix.
The transcript follows standard German spelling, so it usually writes ß in words such as Straße or groß. Switzerland and Liechtenstein write ss instead; if your text is for a Swiss audience, change it in the editor or the exported file.
Up to 99.8% on clear audio, with German punctuation and noun capitalisation. Background noise, people talking over each other and phone-quality sound lower it; the editor keeps the remaining corrections quick.
