English → Portuguese · timing preserved: Translate Subtitles from English to Portuguese

Brazilian and European Portuguese differ enough in vocabulary and address that the variant has to be chosen before translating. Upload an SRT, VTT or video and keep every cue where it was.

What Changes When English Becomes Portuguese

Three things worth knowing before you ship Portuguese captions.

Brazil and Portugal are separate targets
Você, tu and o senhor are not interchangeable
Portuguese expands, and accents matter

The differences run through everyday vocabulary (ônibus and autocarro, tela and ecrã), verb usage and the pronouns used to address someone. Brazilian Portuguese has by far the larger audience, but publishing it to a European Portuguese audience is immediately noticeable — and the reverse even more so.

Brazil and Portugal are separate targets

Brazilian Portuguese leans on você for most contexts; European Portuguese uses tu informally and o senhor or a senhora formally, with verb forms changing accordingly. Mixed forms inside one file are the clearest sign that captions were machine-translated without a target variant.

Você, tu and o senhor are not interchangeable

Expect roughly 20% more text than English, so lines need trimming in fast dialogue. Accented characters — ã, õ, ç, á, ê — are part of the spelling, and losing them in export changes words rather than merely looking untidy.

Portuguese expands, and accents matter

One English cue, translated into Portuguese

The same English line, translated for Brazil and for Portugal.

  1. 00:00:02,000 → 00:00:04,500

English: Download the file to your phone.

Portuguese: Baixe o arquivo no seu celular.

  2. 00:00:02,000 → 00:00:04,500

English: Download the file to your phone.

Portuguese: Descarregue o ficheiro para o telemóvel.

Brazil says baixar, arquivo and celular; Portugal says descarregar, ficheiro and telemóvel. The European version is also longer: 40 characters against 31.

English → Portuguese, Done Right

Portuguese runs longer than English; the timing does not move.

One variant, consistently

Brazilian or European vocabulary and pronouns stay uniform across the file.

Accents intact

ã, õ, ç and accented vowels survive export in SRT and VTT.

Cues keep their English timing

Portuguese lines inherit the start and end time of each English cue, so longer phrasing is tightened, never re-synced.

Brazil or Portugal, checked line by line

Each Portuguese line sits next to its English original, so a Brazilian word in a European video stands out before export.

One source SRT became six market-ready files with timing untouched. Our agency quoted two weeks for the same job.

Uploaded a two-hour recording during lunch — the transcript was waiting before I finished my coffee. The accuracy genuinely surprised me.

TV
Tomas V.Operations Manager

Our legal team approved it because processing stays on EU infrastructure. That alone ruled out most of the competition.

Seeing source and translation together makes QA fast. We ship subtitles the same day we cut the video.

No card, no tricks — I tested real files before paying and upgraded a week later because the workflow stuck.

Had trouble with a huge file — support walked me through batch upload the same morning. Rare these days.

Upload your English SRT or VTT file, or the video itself, and choose Portuguese as the target language. BlaBlaScribe translates every line with AI and keeps the original timestamps, so the Portuguese subtitles stay in sync with the speech. Fix the wording in the editor, then download SRT or VTT or export an MP4 with the subtitles burned in. Translation is available on paid plans from $14 a month.
Yes, and it is worth deciding before you start: vocabulary and forms of address differ enough that viewers notice. Lines remain editable before export.
Around 20%. Lines are compressed during translation so captions stay within two readable lines.
Yes, files are UTF-8 and every accented character is preserved.
Common streaming guidelines allow about 42 characters per line and two lines per cue. European Portuguese in particular reaches that limit quickly, so sentences are condensed to fit.
Yes. Pick a caption style and export an MP4 with the Portuguese subtitles burned in; it renders in your browser. Check ã, õ, ç and other accents in the preview before exporting the full video.
