English → Norwegian · timing preserved: Translate Subtitles from English to Norwegian

Norwegian is compact enough to fit English timing comfortably, but it has two written standards and compounds words the way its neighbours do. Upload an SRT, VTT or video and keep every cue where it was.

What Changes When English Becomes Norwegian

Three things worth knowing before you ship Norwegian captions.

Bokmål or Nynorsk is a real decision
Length is rarely the problem here
Compounds are written as one word

Norwegian has two official written standards. Bokmål is used by the large majority and is the safe default for commercial video; Nynorsk appears in public-sector material and in parts of western Norway. Subtitles that mix forms from both look unfinished to Norwegian readers.

Bokmål or Nynorsk is a real decision

Unlike German or Italian, Norwegian usually lands within a few percent of English, and sometimes shorter. That leaves room to translate naturally instead of compressing — but it also means an unnaturally literal translation has no excuse.

Length is rarely the problem here

Undertekstprogramvare, not underteksts programvare. Splitting compounds is one of the most recognisable errors in Norwegian text, and it changes meaning: røykfritt is smoke-free, røyk fritt is an invitation to smoke freely.

Compounds are written as one word

One English cue, translated into Norwegian

Norwegian stays close to English length and adds the article to the end of the noun.

  1. 00:00:02,000 → 00:00:04,400

English: We’ll send you the invoice tomorrow.

Norwegian: Vi sender deg fakturaen i morgen.

  2. 00:00:04,800 → 00:00:06,300

    English: Open the subtitle file.

    Norwegian: Åpne undertekstfilen.

Both lines are shorter than the English. “The invoice” becomes fakturaen and “the subtitle file” becomes undertekstfilen: one word, article included.

English → Norwegian, Done Right

Norwegian fits English timing easily; the cues stay in place.

Bokmål by default

Captions use the standard most Norwegian viewers read, consistently across the file.

Compounds written correctly

Compound nouns stay single words instead of being split the English way.

Cues keep their English timing

Norwegian lines inherit the start and end time of each English cue, so nothing needs re-syncing.

Room for natural phrasing

Because Norwegian rarely needs compressing, each line can read naturally; the side-by-side view shows where a literal rendering slipped through.

One source SRT became six market-ready files with timing untouched. Our agency quoted two weeks for the same job.

Uploaded a two-hour recording during lunch — the transcript was waiting before I finished my coffee. The accuracy genuinely surprised me.

TV
Tomas V.Operations Manager

Our legal team approved it because processing stays on EU infrastructure. That alone ruled out most of the competition.

Seeing source and translation together makes QA fast. We ship subtitles the same day we cut the video.

No card, no tricks — I tested real files before paying and upgraded a week later because the workflow stuck.

Had trouble with a huge file — support walked me through batch upload the same morning. Rare these days.

Frequently Asked Questions

About translating subtitles from English into Norwegian.

All questions
Upload your English SRT or VTT file, or the video itself, and choose Norwegian as the target language. BlaBlaScribe translates every line with AI and keeps the original timestamps, so the Norwegian subtitles stay in sync with the speech. Fix the wording in the editor, then download SRT or VTT or export an MP4 with the subtitles burned in. Translation is available on paid plans from $14 a month.
Bokmål, which the large majority of readers use. Individual lines can be adjusted in the editor if your project requires Nynorsk.
Usually with room to spare — Norwegian tends to land close to English in length, so cues rarely need compressing.
Yes. SRT and VTT are written in UTF-8, so all three come through unchanged.
Common streaming guidelines allow about 42 characters per line and two lines per cue. Norwegian usually fits comfortably, so most cues need no shortening at all.
Yes. Pick a caption style and export an MP4 with the Norwegian subtitles burned in; it renders in your browser. Check æ, ø and å in the preview before exporting the full video.
